I already have a pi3 and 7 inch touch screen has anyone else got it working on this hardware

If the 7inch is HDMI, the only thing to do is to re-enable and HDMI port. The command (from the wiki) that enables the driver has different parameters for resolution, rotation and HDMI enable|disable. Call it accordingly.
About the Pi, I already swap all the time the same SD between a Zero W and a Pi 3 B with no problem.

ive booted it tonight seems to hang on daily apt activities

The latest image is not released yet. Try the latest once it is out.
